Save percentage and goals against average are useful, but they miss the most important part of goaltending: context. To truly evaluate a goalie, we need to understand the difficulty and details behind every shot and save.

Why SV% and GAA Don't Tell the Whole Goalie Story

For years, goaltenders have mainly been judged by two numbers:

  • Save percentage (SV%)
  • Goals against average (GAA)

They are easy to calculate and offer a quick snapshot, but they rarely answer the most important question:

How well did the goalie actually play?

Goaltending is one of the most context-driven positions in sport. Two goalies can finish a game with identical save percentages while having completely different workloads, reads, and demands placed on them.

The Limits of Save Percentage

Save percentage is straightforward:

SV% = Saves ÷ Shots Against

In theory, the higher the percentage, the better the performance. But that only works if all shots are equal.

They are not.

Consider two goaltenders in separate games:

Goalie A

  • Faces 35 shots
  • Most attempts come from the outside
  • Has clear sightlines on the puck
  • Limited east-west puck movement
  • Allows 2 goals

Goalie B

  • Faces 35 shots
  • Confronts multiple backdoor chances
  • Deals with traffic and screens on several attempts
  • Faces frequent odd-man rushes
  • Allows 2 goals

On the stat sheet, both goaltenders post a .943 SV%.

On the ice, those performances are clearly not equivalent.

Save percentage captures outcomes. It does not capture difficulty. It treats a low-danger perimeter wrist shot the same as a lateral, point-blank backdoor one-timer, even though the skill set and execution needed from the goalie are completely different.

The Limits of Goals Against Average

Goals against average has a similar problem. It is heavily influenced by what happens in front of the goalie.

A low GAA can be the product of a strong defensive environment that limits quality chances. A higher GAA can come from playing behind a team that gives up frequent dangerous looks.

Picture a goaltender who routinely faces:

  • Breakaways
  • Backdoor tap-ins
  • Second and third chance rebounds around the crease
  • Heavy screens
  • Regular coverage breakdowns

Over a season, that goalie may carry a higher GAA than another goaltender behind a tight, structured system that limits high-danger chances.

Does that automatically make the first goalie worse?

No.

GAA is often as much a reflection of team defense, puck management, and systems play as it is of individual goaltending performance.

The Context Traditional Stats Are Missing

To properly understand how a goalie played, we have to look at what happened before the puck was released and around the save itself. Key questions include:

  • Was the goalie set on the shot?
  • Did the play require significant lateral movement?
  • Was the goalie dealing with a screen?
  • Was the shot a rebound or a clean first look?
  • What was the game situation (even strength, power play, penalty kill, score, time remaining)?
  • What type of shot was it (slap shot, wrist shot, tip, etc.)?
  • Where did the play originate and how did it develop?
  • Was the goalie in recovery from a previous save or movement?
  • Did the goalie make the correct read and choose the right technique?

These elements change the degree of difficulty on every attempt. A basic box score does not account for any of them.

What Modern Goalie Evaluation Should Include

Stronger goalie evaluation blends results and context. Rather than only counting saves and goals, it looks at how those saves and goals happened.

That means digging into areas such as:

  • Shot types – where shots come from and what kind of release they have
  • Movement demands – how often and how far the goalie has to move laterally or in recovery
  • Positioning – stance, depth, angle, and route efficiency
  • Rebound control – where pucks end up after the first save
  • Situational performance – results in specific contexts like rush chances, in-zone play, power play, penalty kill, and score states
  • Traffic and screens – how often the goalie tracks pucks through bodies
  • Rush opportunities – odd-man rushes and broken plays off the rush
  • Recovery sequences – how the goalie manages secondary and tertiary chances
  • Consistency across game situations – whether their game holds up under different pressures and scenarios

When coaches and goalies look at these layers, patterns start to emerge that traditional stats never reveal.

For example:

  • A goalie may carry an impressive save percentage but regularly struggle on lateral, east-west plays.
  • Another goalie might show a lower overall save percentage yet be consistently strong against the most dangerous attempts.

Without context, those stories remain buried inside a single number.

Moving Beyond Surface-Level Numbers

Save percentage and GAA still have a place in goaltender evaluation. They are useful starting points, but they should not be the final verdict on a goalie's performance.

To push goalie development forward, we need to understand not only what happened, but why it happened.

That means combining:

  • Detailed game data
  • Video review of key sequences
  • Performance tracking over time
  • Training and workload history
  • Situational and tactical analysis

When these pieces are brought together, coaches and goalies can finally evaluate performance in a way that matches the complexity of the position.

Great goaltending can't be reduced to a single metric. It is about understanding the full story behind every shot, every save, and every goal against.


For goalies and coaches, the takeaway is simple: use SV% and GAA as a reference, but build your evaluation around context. That is where true performance — and true development — lives.
